Allowing Beauty and Courage to Win

Sometimes, though, just capturing the beauty of a landscape has not felt like enough. From mass shootings to the election to the pandemic, I have felt the need to do more in my work. Recently, I have been adding texture in my paintings by layering scraps of paper with text underneath the paint. Newspapers clippings from the horrific shooting a the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, for example, hide beneath the colorful cliffs of Aquinnah, radiating the same kind of light and resilience of the gay community.  If you look closely, you might find a small rainbow in the middle of the cliffs..
