Pulse Under Cliffs

These are the iconic clay cliffs at Aquinnah, at the very tip of Martha’s Vineyard. They have since dimmed a bit over time but I restore the vibrancy of their past colors in this piece. As I did with Resistance, I put a layer of newsprint down on the canvas first and then painted over it, allowing just a bit of textured layering to come through. The original images had a bloody AK-47 and faces of the murdered young people at the Pulse Nightclub. I’d rather look at the cliffs, but I never forget what is under them.
